Men have a reputation for putting off doctor visits, brushing aside symptoms, and convincing themselves that everything will be fine. Unfortunately, when it comes to prostate cancer, that attitude can be dangerous. The good news is that prostate cancer is one of the most treatable and curable forms of cancer when detected early. Yet too many men still bury their heads in the sand and delay seeking medical advice until the disease has progressed.
Prostate cancer remains one of the most common cancers affecting men worldwide. According to cancer statistics, approximately one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. Age is one of the biggest risk factors, with the majority of cases occurring in men over 50. Family history, ethnicity, lifestyle factors, and genetics can also increase the risk.
What makes prostate cancer different from many other cancers is that it often develops slowly and can be detected long before it becomes life-threatening. Modern screening techniques, imaging technology, and treatment options have dramatically improved outcomes. In fact, when prostate cancer is detected early and remains confined to the prostate gland, survival rates are exceptionally high.
The challenge is that many men either don’t recognise the symptoms or choose to ignore them.
Symptoms Men Should Never Ignore
While early prostate cancer may not cause any symptoms at all, there are several warning signs that should prompt a visit to your GP or healthcare professional:
- Difficulty starting urination
- Weak or interrupted urine flow
- Frequent urination, particularly during the night
- Difficulty emptying the bladder completely
- Pain or burning during urination
- Blood in the urine
- Blood in semen
- Erectile dysfunction
- Pain in the lower back, hips, pelvis, or upper thighs
- Unexplained weight loss or fatigue in more advanced cases
It’s important to remember that many of these symptoms can also be caused by non-cancerous prostate enlargement or other urinary conditions. However, only proper medical assessment can determine the cause.
The Importance of PSA Testing
One of the most valuable tools available today is the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test. While PSA testing is not perfect, it provides an important indicator that can help doctors identify potential prostate problems and determine whether further investigation is required.
I have personally been monitoring my own PSA levels for the past ten years. Like many men, I understood the importance of keeping an eye on my prostate health, particularly as I entered my fifties. Now aged 60, that vigilance proved worthwhile.
Last year, following further investigations, I underwent a perineal MRI of the prostate. The results led to a diagnosis with a Gleason Score of 6, indicating a low-grade prostate cancer. While hearing the word “cancer” is never easy, the diagnosis also came with reassuring news. Because it had been detected early and assessed carefully, my urologist recommended active surveillance rather than immediate aggressive treatment.
Today, I work closely with my urologist and undergo monitoring every six months. Regular PSA testing, imaging, and specialist reviews allow us to keep a close watch on the situation and make informed decisions if any changes occur.
My experience highlights an important lesson. Had I ignored regular testing or delayed medical assessment, the outcome could have been very different.
Modern Treatments Offer Real Hope
The encouraging reality is that men diagnosed with prostate cancer today have more treatment options than ever before.
Depending on the stage, grade, age, and overall health of the patient, treatment options may include:
Active Surveillance
For low-risk cancers, doctors may recommend careful monitoring rather than immediate treatment. This approach avoids unnecessary side effects while ensuring the cancer remains under close observation.
Surgery
Radical prostatectomy involves removing the prostate gland and can often provide a complete cure when cancer is localised.
Radiation Therapy
Highly targeted radiation treatments have become increasingly precise and effective, reducing damage to surrounding tissues.
Brachytherapy
This treatment involves placing radioactive seeds directly into the prostate, delivering focused treatment to the cancer.
Hormone Therapy
Hormone treatments can slow or stop the growth of prostate cancer cells by reducing testosterone levels.
Advanced Targeted Therapies
Newer treatments, including targeted therapies and immunotherapies, continue to improve outcomes for men with more advanced disease.
The result is that prostate cancer, when detected early, often has one of the best prognoses among major cancers. Many men go on to live long, healthy, active lives following diagnosis and treatment.
Don’t Wait for Symptoms to Become Severe
One of the greatest dangers is assuming that because symptoms are mild, they can be ignored. Prostate cancer often develops quietly. Some men experience no symptoms at all until the disease has progressed.
Regular health checks, discussions with your GP, and consideration of PSA testing can make a significant difference. Men over 50 should be proactive about prostate health, and those with a family history may need to start discussions even earlier.
The message is simple: don’t be embarrassed, don’t be fearful, and don’t put it off.
If you notice symptoms, get checked.
If you’re over 50, talk to your doctor about prostate health.
If you’re already monitoring your PSA, stay committed to regular testing.
Early detection can mean the difference between a simple management plan and a far more complicated journey.
Prostate cancer is not a diagnosis that should automatically lead to despair. In many cases, it is highly treatable, highly manageable, and often curable. But those positive outcomes depend on one crucial factor: taking action.
Men have never had better tools available to protect their health. The challenge is making sure we actually use them.
