TAWAU: Women in Sabah must challenge patriarchal assumptions that leadership belongs mainly to men by demonstrating their competence and capabilities, said Institute for Development Studies Sabah (IDS) Chairperson Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun.
She said women should not be appointed merely to fulfil quotas but must show they are qualified, capable and able to produce work equal to others.
Azizah said women remained underrepresented among top decision-makers, including in Parliament, and must take the initiative to lead change rather than wait for it to happen.
She said this after launching the fourth Women’s Leadership Empowerment Workshop organised by IDS through its Women’s Initiative Leadership Committee here Saturday, in line with the Sabah Women’s Action Plan 2026-2035.
Azizah also urged women to continually acquire knowledge and field experience, while using social media responsibly to deliver accurate information and educate the public.
