SHAH ALAM - The Selangor state government might postpone the Primary Religious School Assessment (PSRA) next week if the haze worsens in the state.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the government and the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) would monitor the current situation, including the Malaysian Meteorological Department reports.
"We are looking at the current situation. If it gets worse, we will review. I can’t make a direct decision as we need to look at the Metorological report to see the weather and environmental conditions, he said when met after a talk in conjunction with Malaysia Day 2026 at Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Polytechnic here today.
Selangor has six areas with unhealthy Air Pollution Index (API) readings, with Johan Setia having the highest reading at 188, followed by Shah Alam (173), Klang (167), Petaling Jaya (166), Banting (164) and Kuala Selangor (163).
Amirudin, who is also Education Committee chairman said that the state government had parameters to determine follow up action regarding the haze, including closing schools should API readings exceed 200.
"If it reaches 200, we will ask schools to close. If it reaches 300, we will also apply for Emergency. This is the criteria set and we will ask schools to close or to stop activities. Parents will also be advised to take their children home,” he said, adding that the state government is arranging for facemasks to be distributed free to students in Selangor.
On a separate issue, he said he was waiting for an audit or review of risky drains in Selangor and confirmed there has been a case of children drowning in Puncak Alam previously.
He has also requested the Kuala Selangor Municipal Council to send an immediate report and take action to cover the drain. - BERNAMA
