Kota Kinabalu: The public has been urged to recognise the warning signs of heatstroke and seek immediate medical attention when serious symptoms develop during hot weather.
St John Ambulance Malaysia (SJAM) Pantai Barat Selatan (PBSA) Area Supt Petrus C Mojuntin said confusion, fainting and changes in a person’s level of consciousness could be signs of heatstroke.
He told Daily Express that anyone experiencing such symptoms after exposure to hot weather should seek medical assistance immediately.
Petrus advised those experiencing dizziness, headaches, nausea, weakness or near-fainting to stop their activities, rest in a cooler place and drink water.
He said children, senior citizens and outdoor workers required particular attention as they could be more vulnerable to the effects of hot weather.
Petrus also urged the public to drink enough water, reduce strenuous activities during excessively hot conditions and take regular breaks in shaded areas.
Meanwhile, PBSA Area Commander Jansen Sai said early prevention and awareness were important in reducing the risk of heat-related emergencies.
“Prevent heat-related illnesses and do not wait until the body can no longer cope. Drink enough water, reduce exposure to hot weather and rest when the body begins showing signs of fatigue,” he said.
Sai also urged the public to look out for children, senior citizens and those working under the hot sun.
