Punjab recorded its highest electricity demand of the year on Monday, with peak demand touching 16,940 MW amid the ongoing heatwave across the state.

The demand has risen sharply compared with the same period last year. On June 29, 2025, Punjab’s peak power demand stood at 15,421 MW, while it climbed to 16,940 MW on June 29 this year.

The upward trend has continued over the past few days. On June 28, demand was 16,844 MW, up from 16,818 MW on the corresponding day last year. On June 27, it reached 16,604 MW, compared with 15,736 MW a year earlier. On June 26, the state recorded a demand of 16,464 MW, up from 12,961 MW. On June 25, demand stood at 16,335 MW, compared with 14,697 MW last year. On June 24, it touched 15,980 MW against 15,946 MW on the same day last year.

Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) officials said electricity demand was likely to cross 17,000 MW in the coming days if the heatwave persisted.

To meet the rising demand, power generation has been ramped up across thermal and hydroelectric plants. All four units of the Ropar Thermal Plant were operational, generating 524 MW. Three units at the Lehra Mohabbat Thermal Plant generated 562 MW, while one unit remained shut. The Goindwal Sahib Thermal Plant produced 490 MW from its two operational units.

Among the private plants, the Rajpura Thermal Plant generated 1,326 MW from two units, while the Talwandi Sabo Thermal Plant, the state’s largest, produced 1,618 MW from all three units.

Punjab’s hydroelectric projects generated 972 MW on Monday. The Ranjit Sagar Dam contributed 545 MW from four generating units. The two units of the Anandpur Sahib Hydel Project generated 55 MW each, while the Shanan Hydel Power Project at Joginder Nagar in Himachal Pradesh produced 82 MW.

The total power generation from Punjab government-owned projects, including thermal, hydel, solar and renewable sources, stood at around 5,787 MW on Monday. The remaining demand was met through the central power pool and other sources.

Meanwhile, consumers in several rural and urban areas reported unannounced power outages during the day and at night. However, PSPCL officials denied imposing power cuts.
