While 5G cellular connection and the essential infrastructure have covered the major cities and streets around the world and are still meeting general demands in terms of speed, latency, and bandwidth, Qualcomm, on the other hand, feels that tech shouldn’t slow down, so yeah, 6G commercialization by 2029 is the road ahead.

To do this, the tech giant formed a new strategic coalition featuring companies like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Cisco, Dell, Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung Electronics, ASUS, BT Group, T-Mobile, and Reliance Jio, alongside dozens of other telecom operators, infrastructure providers, regional carriers, and device brands across the globe.

Instead of being just a “faster and stronger” wireless connection, 6G is going to be “AI-native” from the get-go, packing connectivity, wide-area sensing, and high-performance compute that fits into recent breakthroughs and applications in the telebroadcasting industry, such as intelligent radios with built-in sensing capabilities, virtualized and cloud-based RAN powered by energy-efficient compute, AI-driven network autonomy, plus a combination of edge and centralized data centers built to handle entirely new AI workloads.

3 architectural domains of evices, networks, and cloud infrastructure have been stated in Qualcomm’s roadmap, with the development and publication of essential 6G standards, early system validation, and showcase of spec-compliant pre-commercial devices and networks by 2028, with 2029 seeing global, interoperable commercial deployments

There’s also a strong business angle here. Beyond technical development, members aim to unlock new business models and AI-driven services, from context-aware data platforms to low-altitude aerial and terrestrial traffic management, large-scale analytics, and next-gen enterprise and consumer devices.

If this plays out as envisioned, 6G could redefine how telcos position themselves not just as connectivity providers, but as AI infrastructure companies.
