POLICE in Dungun have praised the alert actions of a customer who successfully thwarted an attempted robbery at a jewellery shop in Paka.

The suspect, aged 33, was apprehended at around 12.20 pm the following day.

According to Dungun District Police Chief, Superintendent Maizura Abdul Kadir, CCTV footage revealed that the man entered the store wearing a kopiah and a face mask.

“The suspect asked the shop staff to fetch a gold chain, claiming he intended to purchase it. He then attempted to seize the chain and flee,” said Maizura.

However, the robbery was swiftly foiled when a staff member managed to lock the shop’s automatic door.

“The suspect tried to force the door open but was unsuccessful before a customer intervened, apprehending him and contacting the police,” Maizura added.

The suspect was subsequently taken to the Dungun District Police Headquarters for further investigation. Police discovered that he had used a vehicle with a false registration plate, which was actually registered under his uncle’s name.

The suspect is being held in remand until Sunday under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which pertains to theft in a building. - December 27, 2025
