In a major anti-encroachment drive, a team from the Municipal Committee (MC), Radaur, demolished about 80 temporary encroachments on municipal land in Deha Basti, part of Chhota Bans Colony in Yamunanagar district, on Saturday.

The demolition drive was carried out under the supervision of Municipal Engineer (ME) Sandeep Sharma and Sanitary Inspector Sumit Bains. Ashu Kamboj, Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of the Haryana Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department, was appointed duty magistrate by Deputy Commissioner Preeti.

According to officials, the MC team removed encroachments from public land using several earth-moving machines.

Some residents attempted to protest against the demolition, but a heavy police presence, deployed under the leadership of Rajesh Rana, Station House Officer (SHO) of Radaur police station, prevented any disruption to the operation.

“The team conducted an anti-encroachment drive in Deha Basti in Radaur town, removing illegal huts, unauthorised structures and boundary walls from public land and MC land today,” Sharma said.

He added that those involved in the encroachments had been served notices several months ago and asked to remove the structures, but had failed to comply.

Municipal Committee workers removed household items, including refrigerators, coolers, washing machines, cots, cylinders and other belongings, from the huts and loaded them onto municipal trolleys. The items were later confiscated and transported to the MC office.

Deha Basti was previously part of the gram panchayat of Radauri village but now falls under the Municipal Committee, Radaur, which was granted municipal committee status in 2016.

A local social worker alleged that neither the gram panchayat of Radauri nor the Municipal Committee had taken timely action against residents of Deha Basti, a part of Chhota Bans village, who had allegedly been occupying MC land illegally for decades.

The social worker said the situation had worsened to the point where a large area of Municipal Committee land had been encroached upon.

According to information, local municipal councillors, led by Municipal Committee Chairman Rajneesh Mehta Shalu, met the Radaur Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) and submitted a memorandum seeking action against the encroachers.
