KUALA LUMPUR – Former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli has been summoned by police for questioning over remarks he made at a political gathering in Selayang concerning alleged corporate mafia activities, PKR vice-president R Ramanan and former police intelligence chief Datuk Seri Shuhaily Mohd Zain.

In a media statement today, Rafizi said he had received a notice from Bukit Aman instructing him to appear for questioning at 10am tomorrow (Tuesday).

He said the investigation would be conducted under Sections 500 and 505 of the Penal Code, relating to criminal defamation and statements that could cause public alarm or disrupt public tranquillity.

The probe follows a police report lodged on October 22, identified as PANTAI/014638/26, concerning a speech Rafizi delivered in Selayang on October 20.

According to the police notice, the report concerns his remarks on several allegations, including an alleged RM9.5 million payment to an individual named Ramanan Ramakrishnan and matters linked to the so-called corporate mafia.

Rafizi said his speech had also addressed allegations that Ramanan received RM9.5 million in bribes to resolve a corporate mafia-related case, as well as the matter involving Shuhaily being brought to court.

He said he respected the investigating officers' responsibilities and would return to Kuala Lumpur, cancelling his scheduled campaign engagements in Melaka on Tuesday to give his statement.

"I respect that the investigating officers are carrying out their duties as instructed. Therefore, I will return to Kuala Lumpur and cancel my campaign events in Melaka on Tuesday to give my statement," he said.

Rafizi, who is the Bersama co-founder, likened the latest investigation to previous police probes and court proceedings he faced when exposing alleged scandals involving 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), Tabung Haji, Felda and the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC).

"What I am going through now is no different from the investigations and court allegations I faced when I exposed the 1MDB, Tabung Haji, Felda and NFC scandals in the past," he said.

He added that he had previously been investigated under Sections 500 and 505 in connection with 1MDB and Tabung Haji, as well as under Section 504 for allegedly insulting Umno.

Rafizi claimed he had been acquitted in all those cases, adding that the 1MDB, Tabung Haji and Felda scandals were subsequently proven true and had become major political issues benefiting PKR and Pakatan Harapan over the past decade.

"Now, a government led by PKR and PH is using the same sections of the Penal Code to intimidate me whenever I speak about the corporate mafia and allegations against R Ramanan," he said.

He also challenged Ramanan to take legal action against him if the PKR vice-president genuinely wanted to clear his name over the alleged RM9.5 million payment.

"R Ramanan should take the same action against me if he truly wants to clear his name of the allegation that he received RM9.5 million in bribes to resolve the corporate mafia case," he said.

Rafizi added that he had already initiated legal proceedings against Ramanan over what he described as the latter's reluctance to address the allegations in court.

He expressed confidence that Bersama had played its part in helping the public confront alleged corporate mafia activities, despite what he described as silence from other political parties.

"I believe time will show that we in Bersama have fulfilled our responsibility to help society fight the corporate mafia while other parties remain silent, even as we face legal pressure such as this," he said. - November 2, 2026
