Manchester United produced an outstanding display to claim a 2-1 win over arch-rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Monday.

With protests going on outside the ground prior to the match, Erik ten Hag grabbed his first win as United manager after taking the bold decision to drop Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire.

New £60m signing Casemiro was paraded in front of the Stretford End before kick-off and Jadon Sancho got the home off to a perfect start.

The England winger showed composure to find space in the box and finish calmly past Alisson with 16 minutes on the clock.

Marcus Rashford, who has been linked with a move to PSG this summer, showed he is still a threat going forward with a brilliant counter-attacking goal to put his side ahead by two goals.

The 24-year-old latched onto a through ball from Anthony Martial before firing in front of the Stretford End.

Liverpool set up a nervy finish when Mohamed Salah scrambled in a header with nine minutes left, however the home side held on for all three points to cap off a valiant performance.

The Reds have yet to win a game this season and pressure has already mounted on whether they will be title contenders this season.

For ten Hag, he has received emphatic vindication after dropping two of his star players and the Dutchman will be hoping that there are many more atmospheric nights at Old Trafford to come.
