Trent Alexander-Arnold’s international future has taken another significant hit after Thomas Tuchel left him out of England’s latest squad. The omission comes despite an expanded 35-man call-up for the March international window.

England are set to face Uruguay and Japan in what is being framed as a key testing period ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Instead of offering Alexander-Arnold a route back in, the larger squad has only reinforced his absence.

It marks the fourth consecutive call-up without the Real Madrid defender, whose last England appearance came in June 2025. Injuries have disrupted his rhythm since then, but the continued exclusion suggests he has slipped firmly down the pecking order at a critical time.

In the press conference after the squad announcement, Tuchel addressed Trent’s absence directly.

“I know what Trent can give us, and we decided to stick with our players,” he said, according to Fabrizio Romano.

“I know his strengths, he’s a huge player but it’s a sportive decision… We stick with Quansah, Spence, Livramento.”

Given the timing, this call-up for two of the three last friendlies before the World Cup carried extra weight.

Missing out in this context endorses the idea that Alexander-Arnold will not make the final list, especially when the German coach preferred to rely on Quansah, originally a centre-back, and Djed Spence, who has been playing as a left-back, in the right-back position.

Real Madrid form not enough to change England stance

Alexander-Arnold’s first season at Real Madrid has been mixed, largely due to injury setbacks that have limited his impact. He has managed just 20 appearances and two assists across all competitions.

Despite that, there are signs of stability returning. He started both Champions League round of 16 matches against Manchester City, indicating growing trust at club level.

That momentum, however, has not translated internationally. Even with increased opportunities in this expanded squad, Tuchel has opted to look elsewhere.
