As inflation tightens its grip on everyday Malaysians, the government has unveiled a special Merdeka gesture: a one-off RM100 credit for all citizens aged 18 and above. Branded as 'Sumbangan Asas Rahmah untuk Semua' (SARA for All), this cash aid - disbursed via MyKad from 31 August to 31 December 2025 - can be used to purchase essentials at over 4,100 outlets nationwide.

Not stopping there, the government also announced a targeted fuel subsidy: RON95 petrol will drop from RM2.05 to RM1.99 per litre, benefiting around 18 million Malaysians. For most, this amounts to a few extra ringgit per full tank - or enough savings to maybe justify an extra teh tarik. And to keep the patriotic cheer alive, Malaysians will enjoy an extra public holiday on 15 September 2025.

While these gestures appear well-intentioned, they are - to put it bluntly - more symbolic than structural. RM100 may buy you a trolley of hope, but it won't buffer against rising grocery & rent, medical fees, or electricity bills. Let’s crunch the numbers:

With 22 million eligible adults, the government will spend RM2 billion - less than 5% of the RM42 billion lost in the 1MDB scandal; just the tip of the iceberg in what remains the mother of all known scandals. So yes - Malaysians are effectively being handed back RM100 from a wallet that was looted of RM1,900 per person. No interest. No justice. But hey - a little free petrol savings as consolation to fulfill Anwar’s unforgettable call-out:

SEKARANG MENANG, BESOK HARGA MINYAK TURUN!

Finally fulfilled. Just… two years later. By six sen.

Better late than never?

Now glance across the Causeway, where Singapore’s Budget 2025 reads like an economic symphony.

Citizens there receive:

CDC vouchers worth up to S$800 (July 2025), S$300 (January 2026),

Cash payouts ranging from S$450 to S$850 (August 2025) and S$100 to S$600 (December 2025),

SG60 vouchers ranging from S$600 (Age: 21-59) to S$800 (Age: 60 and above),

U-Save utility rebates, S&CC housing rebates, MediSave top-ups, education grants, and even culture pass and climate vouchers.

And these benefits are disbursed throughout the year, thoughtfully targeted to low- and middle-income households, seniors, and families: not just during a holiday season.

In contrast, Malaysia’s effort feels like a fireworks display: bright, brief, and quickly forgotten. The six-sen fuel discount is welcome, but it won’t slow the steady rise in food and beverage prices. The public holiday? Sure, it’s a nice breather - but it doesn’t ease the pressure of mounting bills.

So here’s the final score: Singapore offers structured relief. Malaysia delivers spontaneous applause - and a receipt for RM2 billion that could’ve been much more, if not for mega-scale corruption.

Unlike Malaysia’s one-time “thank you” gesture, Singapore’s approach is layered, recurring, and guided by household data and long-term planning. Their support is tailored: not tossed out in bulk.

Final thought? Singapore gives a relief plan. Malaysia gives a celebration. And a hundred-ringgit reminder that we’re still paying for past scandals.

But hey, don’t say the government never gave you anything for all Malaysians: they did. Once as appreciation gesture. For RM100. After RM42 billion disappeared.
