MANILA, Philippines — Lyceum of the Philippines University squeaked past the win-seeking San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 78-77, in the NCAA Season 102 men’s basketball tournament at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.
The Lyceum Pirates held a 76-74 advantage with under a minute remaining in the last quarter.
Eyeing to end its series of losses, Ralph Gabat scored a layup and completed his and-one play to allow the Stags to enjoy a 77-76 advantage with under 5.1 seconds left on the clock.
However, veteran Renz Villegas pulled a jumper with 1.1 seconds left to change the story and allow the Pirates to enjoy a 78-77 advantage.
Villegas led the scoring with 17 points, along with two rebounds and four assists.
“The play wasn’t originally for me, but thankfully, I made the shot. Of course, credit to the coaches too; we’re happy that it worked,” Villegas told the media.
Mclaude Guadaña added 13 points, while Jonathan Dialeg added 10 markers for Lyceum’s victory.
San Sebastián relied on Ralph Gabat’s 22-point output, but it was not enough to crack in the win column.
Lyceum improved to a 3-5 win-loss record, while San Sebastián absorbed its eighth consecutive loss.
