Following the relegation from the Bundesliga, VfL Wolfsburg plan to promote coach Dieter Hecking to sporting director, the Kicker magazine said.

According to the report, the clubs preferred candidates, Marcel Schäfer (RB Leipzig) and Fabian Wohlgemuth (VfB Stuttgart), are unavailable. Hecking, on the other hand, is not being blamed internally for the club's first-ever relegation to the second division.

Hecking won the German Cup with the club in 2015 and is highly regarded Wolfsburg. He returned to the club in March to try to save them from relegation.

Officials in Wolfsburg appreciate the clear communication style of the veteran Bundesliga coach. Another factor in Hecking's favour is that he served as Nuremberg sporting director from 2020 to 2024 and is therefore very familiar with the German second division.

The position of sporting director in Wolfsburg has been vacant since Peter Christiansen was relieved of his duties in March.
