FIFA wants to change the rules for the coin toss before penalty shoot-outs at the World Cup, according to a media report.
From the knock-out stage of this World Cup onwards, referees are set to carry out only one coin toss rather than two before a shoot-out, The Athletic reported on Wednesday.
Under the current rules, referees are obliged to conduct two coin tosses. One toss gives the winner the power to decide which team starts the shoot-out and the other decides which end of the pitch the penalties are taken from. If a captain is lucky twice in the coin toss, he can decide both issues.
In future, the captain who wins the single coin toss is set to have a choice.
Either he decides which goal his team will shoot at or which team starts the shoot-out. The captain of the other team would then decide the other question.
For the new rule to officially apply from the start of the World Cup knock-out stage on June 28, rules body the International Football Association Board (IFAB) must approve the proposed change.
It is still unclear whether the rule is also to be implemented at other football events beyond this World Cup.
