Residents in 30 S’wak areas evacuated after last night’s floods

MIRI – Residents in 30 areas in Sibu, Bintulu, Miri, Marudi and Baram have been evacuated since midnight following last night’s floods.

Eight settlements in Bintulu are inundated, with some 25 families in Kg Baru evacuated to the Bintulu Indoor Stadium after flood waters reached a metre high.

The State Disaster Relief Committee said eight areas in Sibu are badly hit while 14 villages and two schools in the Miri-Marudi region were inundated.

In Baram, about 200km inland from here, settlements Long Benawa, Long Bemang and others are experiencing floods again.

Rescue teams from the state Fire and Rescue Department as well as civil defence have been deployed to the affected areas.
