Responsibility doesn't appear out of nowhere in maturity; rather, it begins subtly and unnoticeably in our early years. These little habits—such as dressing appropriately, eating on time, holding a spoon correctly, and going to bed when instructed—actually serve as our first lessons in responsibility. We just go through it at that age; we don't call it responsibility. However, responsibility changes as we mature. We are accountable for ourselves as children, our decisions as teenagers, and the life we create as adults.
It also encompasses jobs where emotional responsibility is involved, such as being a son or daughter. It's fascinating to note that circumstances that force us to step outside of our comfort zones can also inspire responsibility. While making tea-time snacks, I had a talk with my cousin and came to this realization. When she asked if I was interested in cooking, I had to be honest: I cook because I had to learn, not because I'm passionate about it. Things were unexpected while I was a university student during the COVID period. There were days when courses were conducted virtually, there were problems with the water supply, and traveling out to buy food was uncomfortable.
I didn't suddenly develop a love for cooking during those times; rather, I realized that I had a duty to look for myself. I began by preparing basic meals in an attempt to emulate the coziness of home cooking that I was sorely missing. I learned a valuable lesson from that experience: certain skills are formed out of need rather than desire. We occasionally find ourselves in circumstances that force us to take action, and in doing so, we develop. Our ability to be independent, resilient, and adaptable is shaped by responsibility. Uncertainty is transformed into capacity. Therefore, while interest might lead to responsibility, life itself—that is, the situations that force us to take action even when we don't feel prepared—is what shapes responsibility most of the time.
