KUANTAN: A 61-year-old retiree has lost more than RM337,000 to a fraudulent investment scheme she discovered on Facebook earlier this year.
Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the victim contacted the suspect via WhatsApp and was instructed to make multiple financial transactions.
The woman subsequently made 38 money transfers into 16 different bank accounts between January 30 and March 9, using her savings and proceeds from pawned jewellery.
All communication regarding the investment, including supposed profits, was conducted solely through WhatsApp without any legitimate trading platform.
“During that period, the victim only received one payment amounting to RM392.11,” said Yahaya.
He added that she was later asked for an additional RM210,500 as a purported profit withdrawal charge, which finally aroused her suspicion.
The victim lodged a police report at the Kuantan district police headquarters yesterday.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
