Long before playlists were algorithm-driven or dominated by DJs dealing in all things electronic, ‘Ooru was all about backbeats, guitar riffs, and headbanging. And while it may no longer wear the crown of India’s rock music capital, Bangalore still has plenty of pubs and old-school watering holes that continue to play the best of Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and their ilk. We’ve rounded up a mix of iconic favourites and underrated gems worth revisiting.
Bangalore was, as Steppenwolf once put it, “born to be wild”. About rock music, that is. The city grew up on guitar distortions, band T-shirts, and dreams of participating in a mosh pit. According to many, this love affair began in earnest sometime during the 60s and 70s, when music by legends like The Rolling Stones and The Beatles filtered into the city through radio and word of mouth.
By the 90s, local venues had become incubators for talent, and live music wasn’t just a novelty, it was the go-to form of entertainment. Enter trailblazers like Thermal And A Quarter, folk-rock outfits Swarathma, and heavy metal torchbearers Kryptos. Bengaluru’s artists weren’t just bands playing covers at bars; they were touring internationally, releasing cult albums, and putting Indian rock on the global map. All backed by fiercely loyal fans and a thriving gig circuit.
Today, the landscape looks a bit different. Techno, EDM, and experimental electronic sounds dominate festival line-ups and club calendars, and many of the old gig spaces have disappeared or reinvented themselves. And yet, rock refuses to fade into the background. Bangalore still shows up. It hosts Bandland. It turns out in force for acts like Bloodywood. It even goes down in history as the first Indian pit stop for global giants like Linkin Park. Most importantly, Bangalore continues to nurture pubs and bars where the spirit of rock ’n’ roll is very much alive. Here are a few that are well worth the visit.

At this dimly-lit, grunge paradise that’s been kickin’ it since 1989, beer flows freely and classic rock reigns supreme. A haven for Bangalore’s music lovers — artists, working professionals, and anyone who likes their tunes loud and their atmosphere unpretentious — the walls are adorned with vintage rock posters, while the playlist ranges from 60s southern blues to 70s hard rock (including Metallica, Iron Maiden, and local legends Kryptos.)
Over the decades, generations of patrons have contributed to the pub’s eclectic music collection, passing on tapes and posters that cemented its cult-like following. The menu keeps things simple and hearty: Chilli Pork, Coorgi Pork, Bangalore Chilli Chicken, Dosa Chicken, and Dosa Prawn Curry, with bacon lovers swearing by the indulgent selections. And yes, beer is the only heady beverage on offer, keeping the focus firmly on great food and even better music. This one’s a must-visit for anyone chasing Bangalore’s rock ‘n’ roll soul.

Rock enthusiasts swear by this long-time Indiranagar favourite. Featuring a breezy open-air layout, retro furniture, and walls peppered with rock posters, the pub wears its classic rock ’n’ roll heart on its sleeve. The soundtrack leans heavily on English classic rock and 80s–90s favourites, with just enough metal thrown in to keep the energy high. Beer has always been at the centre of Jimi’s universe — think budget-friendly pints of Kingfisher, Budweiser, Bira, and Toit — though there’s also a solid selection of whiskies, rum, vodka, shooters, and the occasional crowd-pleasing espresso martini.
The food sticks to dependable bar staples and short eats that pair well with drinking: fries, peanut masala, and Mangalorean-inspired dishes that regulars swear by. When you’re not singing along to the music, there’s a pool table to keep things competitive, TVs and a projector for live sports, and plenty of cosy corners to settle into. Recently spruced up, Jimi’s still retains its easy charm, a little more polished perhaps, but unmistakably familiar. On a clear evening (or just after a drizzle), the terrace is where you’ll want to be.

Le Rock

Tucked away just off Brigade Road, Le Rock is one of those rare CBD survivors that has outlasted trends, reinventions, and the disappearance of neighbouring watering holes. Established sometime in the mid-2000s, this old-school pub has long been a refuge for rock loyalists, especially those who cut their teeth on metal, grunge, and classic rock during their college days in and around Church Street.
Despite its central location, the vibe is relaxed and unhurried, with dim lighting, retro touches, and a steady stream of rock anthems from the 70s through the early 2000s. Expect everything from Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple to Alice in Chains and Metallica, often accompanied by music videos that add to the throwback feel. And if you happen to visit on a day when the playlist has gone a different route, all you need to do is ask the staff to switch over.
Le Rock’s other big draws are its remarkably consistent beer (read fresh, well-poured draughts that regulars swear by) and generous happy hours, which run through the week and into the weekends. The food is unfussy, filling, and priced for repeat visits. Crowd favourites include the Minced Chicken Steak, Mutta Roast, Tandoori Rock, Kati Rolls, and chicken platters that are perfect for sharing. Even the humble peanut masala has its fans here. This is a dependable, unfussy pub in Bangalore for anyone chasing old-school rock vibes.

Hard Rock Cafe

Few global brands have embedded themselves into Bangalore’s nightlife quite like Hard Rock Cafe. When it opened its doors in 2007, it didn’t just introduce the city to big burgers and collectable merch. It also became a gateway for many to live gigs, tribute bands, and nights spent shouting along to classic rock anthems.
The central Bengaluru outpost, housed in a striking heritage-style stone building, remains the most iconic. Step inside and you’re surrounded by music history: guitars, stage outfits, photographs, and memorabilia from some of rock’s biggest names line the walls, turning the space into a functioning museum that happens to serve drinks as well. This energy extends to all other outposts in the city as well. The soundtrack stays firmly on brand: classic rock from the 70s through the 2000s, with live performances, tribute acts, and themed nights regularly pulling in loyal crowds. Then there’s the “Rock Shop” that offers retail merchandise, including iconic branded t-shirts, pins, and more. If that doesn’t make it one of the best pubs in Bangalore for rock enthusiasts, we don’t know what does.
Food here is unapologetically indulgent. The Legendary Burger still does exactly what it promises, while the Nachos, loaded appetisers, and Steak Burgers are designed for sharing (and recovery between songs). Portions are generous, drinks are strong, and while prices skew higher than your neighbourhood pub, you’re paying as much for the atmosphere as the meal. The bar is well stocked with beers on tap, spirits, and signature cocktails, though seasoned regulars will tell you to stick to beer if you’re settling in for the long haul.

Elongo’s Pub & Grub
Holding its own amid Indiranagar’s ever-churning bar scene, Elongo’s Pub & Grub is one of those places you tend to hear about through word of mouth, usually from someone who’s been going for years and doesn’t love sharing it too widely. Unflashy, affordable, and refreshingly relaxed, it’s built for long conversations, repeat rounds of beer, and rock music that never overwhelms the room.
The space is cosy and unfussy, with posters and life-size artwork of rock legends lining the walls. The soundtrack leans towards classic rock and metal from the 60s through the 90s, played at just the right volume (loud enough to set the mood, soft enough that you can still talk without shouting). It’s a beer kind of place, with frequent happy-hour offers and generous buy-one-get-one deals that make it especially popular for laid-back weeknights and larger groups.
Regulars swear by the meat-heavy menu: Coorgi Pork, Chilli Beef, Guna Chicken, Bacon-wrapped Prawns, Lemon Chicken Wings, and dependable bar staples like Peanut Masala and Peri Peri Fries. Portions are solid, prices are forgiving, and there’s no pressure to rush through your order. The service, often singled out by name by returning patrons, is warm, attentive, and genuinely invested in making you feel at home. For rock fans who want good music, cold beer, and a place where time tends to slip by unnoticed, this is one of the most underrated pubs in Bangalore to experience it all at.
