Germany's Manuel Neuer came out of international retirement to equal the World Cup appearance record for goalkeepers on Sunday.
Bayern Munich's Neuer, 40, drew level with former France great Hugo Lloris with a 20th match over five tournaments since a 2010 debut in Germany's match against Curaçao.
The 2014 World Cup winner Neuer retired from the national team after their quarter-final exit at Euro 2024. He was recalled by coach Julian Nagelsmann for the World Cup.
Neuer can gain sole possession of the record in Germany's second match against Ivory Coast on Saturday. A maximum eight games are possible at the 48-team tournament.
Neuer has been Germany's first choice goalkeeper at every big tournament since 2010 and was playing his 125th cap on Sunday.
The overall record is 26 matches set by Argentina great Lionel Messi who is still active and set to start a sixth World Cup on Tuesday.
