KUALA LUMPUR – Revenge and fierce business rivalry have been identified as the driving forces behind a brazen attack on a karaoke centre in Taman Shamelin, Cheras, last Sunday, police confirmed.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus, revealed that the assault, which occurred around 1:30 pm, was orchestrated by individuals who allegedly hired a gang to carry out the violent act.

“Thus far, we have arrested 45 local men aged between 14 and 57, both within and outside the Klang Valley,” Fadil told reporters during a press conference held at the KL contingent police headquarters today.

“Two of the detainees are secondary school students who were recruited by the gang for this purpose.”

Police have also seized the lorry used to crash through the karaoke centre’s main gate, along with an array of weapons including iron rods, baseball bats, and wooden sticks.

“Although the establishment holds a valid business licence, preliminary investigations indicate that the owner engaged gang members to oversee operations.

“It appears that personal grudges and commercial rivalry escalated into the attack and subsequent riot,” he said.

Fadil added that investigations are ongoing to track down additional suspects involved, including the mastermind or intermediaries who directed the rampage.

All arrested individuals are Malaysian nationals, with detentions taking place across the Klang Valley and other states.

“Initially, eight suspects were apprehended the day after the incident. One was remanded for two days, while the others were released on police bail.

“Subsequently, 37 more individuals were arrested yesterday under Section 117 of the Penal Code, and remand approval for four days has been granted starting today,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Sections 427 and 148 of the Penal Code.

“The intrusion and riot, believed to have involved more than 60 masked individuals, occurred at approximately 1:30 pm,” Fadil added. - April 8, 2026
