Rio Ferdinand has entered the growing debate surrounding Neymar’s place in Brazil’s World Cup plans.
The former England defender, widely regarded as one of the best centre-backs of his generation, has built a strong presence as a pundit since retiring.
His comments come at a time when Neymar’s chances of making the 2026 squad appear increasingly uncertain.
The Brazilian superstar was left out of the latest call-up, the final one before the squad announcement scheduled for 16 May.
Rio Ferdinand sends message to Carlos Ancelotti over Neymar

Ferdinand shared his thoughts in a video on X, backing Neymar’s return.
He claimed that the World Cup is a stage made for stars such as the former Barcelona winger, someone who could change a game in just one move.
The former Manchester United defender said: “Neymar hasn’t made the recent squad, man. I cannot believe it. I saw him on social media saying he’s still going to continue to work in hope that it might turn around and he’ll get put into the squad.
“As a football fan, I am praying that Neymar’s there and he touches the pitch of the World Cup because this is what it’s about. The greats of the game, the icons that you go, remember that moment. Neymar could produce one of those moments at a World Cup. I’m telling you, please, Carlo, get Neymar back in.”
His plea adds to the pressure on Ancelotti ahead of a major selection decision, but the Italian coach does not seem fazed by those types of comments.
Brazil defeat to France reignites Neymar debate
Brazil’s 2-1 defeat to France last Thursday has intensified the discussion.
The friendly, played at Gillette Stadium in the United States, exposed issues in attack.
Vinicius Jr. and Raphinha, Brazil’s biggest stars right now, both struggled to make a decisive impact during the match.
Their underwhelming performances quickly brought Neymar’s absence back into focus.
With the World Cup approaching, questions remain over whether Brazil can afford to leave out one of their most experienced and talented stars.
