Rita Wilson is debuting a massive back tattoo that appears to be a nod to her son, Chet Hanks.
The 69-year-old singer and actor promoted her new song “Stranger with Age” by posting an Instagram carousel Saturday that included a picture of her showing off a large Celtic cross tattoo on her back.
“STRANGER WITH AGE? Who? Me? I’m lovin’ it!” she wrote. “Who else is stranger with age? ‘STRANGER WITH AGE’ song is out everywhere.”
It is unclear if the tattoo is temporary or permanent ink. The design of the cross matches the permanent tattoo on the back of 36-year-old Chester “Chet” Marlon Hanks, who she shares with actor Tom Hanks.
The picture also shows another design of a sun on Wilson’s arm that matches one of Chet’s permanent arm tattoos, as well as working on her arm that appears to say “Happy birthday Chet.”
Wilson shares two children with Tom, who she married in 1988, as well as three grandchildren.
She opened up about raising her children in an interview with The Independent earlier this year, saying how she wanted to protect her family’s privacy for so long.
“You’re trying to make sure they can grow up in a world where they’re able to be themselves, without the burden that comes with being a public figure,” she explained in April.
Wilson said about Chet during the interview: “Oh my God, he’s a character! He’s so eccentric. You know what? He is the person I could never have been at that age… he’s just out there being himself, take it or leave it. I love that.”
Chet has sparked criticism over the years for his occasionally bizarre online presence, including his controversial Jamaican accent while congratulating his father for his Oscar nomination and his viral 2021 video about “White Boy Summer.”
He has quieted down in recent years and now mostly posts on Instagram about his travels. Chet has also followed in his parents’ footsteps by dabbling in acting gigs and releasing music.
Wilson’s new song, “Stranger with Age,” is part of the deluxe version of her album Sound of a Woman, which she released in May.
In an interview with Melissa Rivers posted September 23, Wilson opened up about why she wanted to perform the song, which was written by Nashville songwriters Lori McKenna and Liz Rose.
“The reason I loved it was because it’s this idea that we start doing things that we never have done before because we don’t care anymore,” she said. “We’re liberated by our own belief systems of what age was or what we should be doing, shouldn’t be doing, saying, not saying, and it tied right into finding your voice or having a voice, which was what the album Sound of a Woman is about.”
