Kota Kinabalu: The State Government, along with government departments and City Hall (DBKK), will hold further discussions to assist victims of the March 1 fire at Kampung Cempaka in Likas.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said as a caring and people-centred government, special attention will be given to the plight of the fire victims, especially during the fasting month.

“We are deeply concerned, and as a government that prioritises the welfare of the people, we have provided financial assistance amounting to RM1,300 to the heads of households (KIRs) affected by the fire.

Of this, RM1,000 is from the State Government, while RM300 is contributed by Yayasan Sabah Group. “We are committed to addressing the plight of these fire victims, particularly during the fasting month, as we understand their discomfort and hardships. Therefore, the Government, along with relevant agencies, will work towards finding the best way to further assist them.

“In addition to financial aid, the Government is also providing various other forms of assistance, such as gas and stoves from the Sabah Welfare Foundation and food baskets from Yayasan Sabah Group,” he said after visiting the fire victims of Kampung Cempaka at the temporary evacuation centre (PPS) at Likas Multipurpose Hall, here, Monday.

The fire, which broke out in the early hours of Saturday, left 511 people from 91 families homeless. Two temporary evacuation centres (PPS) have been set up to accommodate the fire victims. PPS Likas Multipurpose Hall currently houses 34 KIRs (involving 200 people), while PPS Damai accommodates 57 KIRs (311 people).

Various parties have also stepped in to provide food aid, including the Community Development Leaders Unit (UPPM). The fire victims received initial assistance upon registering at the PPS, including food baskets from the Malaysian Civil Defence Department, ready-to-eat meal packs and food and beverages from the Social Welfare Department.
