PUTATAN: The Sabah government has allocated RM11.15 million for landscape and green infrastructure projects across local authorities this year, said Deputy Chief Minister II and Local Government and Housing Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Joachim Gunsalam.
“The funds will support the development and upgrading of green infrastructure to improve the well-being of local communities,” he said in a speech delivered by Assistant Minister Datuk Isnin Aliasnih during the “I P.L.A.N.T.” programme at Taman Pasir Putih.
Dr. Joachim said the initiative aligns with the state’s landscape development plan focused on sustainability, environmental aesthetics, and ecological balance.
“We have rich biodiversity, and we must build towns and cities that reflect that beauty while preserving our environment,” he said.
He noted that the “I P.L.A.N.T.” programme — Inisiatif Penghijauan Lestari, Aspirasi Negeri Taman Terindah — is more than symbolic tree planting. “It’s a strategic agenda that contributes to long-term goals in sustainable development and the green economy.”
As of December 2024, over 331,000 trees have been planted, but that’s still short of the 1.3 million target by 2033. “There is still much to do. I urge all PBTs to step up reforestation efforts in their respective areas,” he said.
He also highlighted community-based initiatives such as Community Gardens and Rakan Lestari, and national-level collaborations like the SDG Roadmap and Low Carbon Schools project.
“All of this is part of our collective effort to make Sabah not just the most beautiful garden state, but one that is economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable,” he added.
