The estimated RM3,100 monthly wage for a single person in Kuala Lumpur should be viewed as a financial floor, not a guarantee of a comfortable life.

According to Berita Harian, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) personal financial planning lecturer Professor Dr Mohamad Fazli Sabri explained that while the figure provides a reasonable starting point for meeting basic needs, a decent standard of living involves more than just having enough money to pay the bills.

Mohamad Fazli said while the RM3,100 figure coming from the GEAR-uP initiative‘s estimates for the reasonable living wage for a single person in Kuala Lumpur, how far that salary stretches depends heavily on individual circumstances.

He also said that Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) Deputy Governor Datuk Fraziali Ismail reportedly said the figure was not a newly established definitive estimate.

Instead, it was based on the RM2,700 amount previously calculated for a single person in Kuala Lumpur several years ago, with a rough adjustment made to account for inflation.

“The minimum wage is the lowest wage set by law and government policy. A reasonable living wage, however, looks at a bigger question: does someone earning a full-time income make enough to live a decent life? This means having some money left for savings and financial protection, rather than just enough to get by until the end of the month.”

“Someone renting a room near their workplace and using public transport would naturally be in a different financial position from someone who owns a car, pays loan instalments, rents their own place and, at the same time, helps support their parents,” he said to Berita Harian.

Citing the Belanjawanku 2024/2025, Mohamad Fazli said a single person in the Klang Valley needs around RM1,970 a month if they use public transport, compared with approximately RM2,800 for someone who owns a car.

That’s an RM830 difference every month: money that could otherwise go towards savings, insurance or other essential expenses.

Paying your bills isn’t the same as being financially secure

Mohamad Fazli explained that a reasonable living wage should cover more than food, rent and transport.

“For example, someone earning RM3,100 might be able to cover all their bills, but if they only have RM50 or RM100 left after paying their commitments, even a small emergency, such as a car breakdown or falling ill, could force them to rely on a credit card, buy now, pay later (BNPL) services or borrow money from family,”

“So, we cannot conclude that every single individual who receives RM3,100 automatically achieves financial well-being,” he said.

Ultimately, a salary that gets you through the month isn’t necessarily one that prepares you for the next unexpected expense.
