SANDAKAN: A RM350,000 upgrade of five tennis courts in Sandakan will benefit tennis development in the district, said Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh on Saturday.
The project, which began on Aug 28, 2024 and was completed on Nov 27 the same year, included upgrading court surfaces, constructing new drainage systems and installing portable awnings for user comfort.
Management of the courts has been handed over to the Sandakan Municipal Council.
“These new facilities open great opportunities for Sandakan to emerge as a host for State and National tennis championships, given its adequate and quality tennis court facilities,” Hannah said during the handover ceremony.
She hopes the tennis courts would be fully utilised to host various upcoming tennis tournaments and serve as a meeting hub for tennis athletes from across Sabah.
Hannah noted that while Sabah has produced many high-performing athletes representing Malaysia, the lack of quality tennis courts has hindered talent development.
Through Sports Matching Grants and community sports funds, the Ministry aims to ensure states like Sabah have opportunities to host national and international championships.
She also praised Sandakan MP Vivian Wong for her contributions to youth talent development and sports infrastructure in the district, noting her previous work on a skate park project.
This initiative is part of the Madani Government’s efforts to upgrade sports facilities that directly benefit citizens, particularly in Sandakan and surrounding areas.
