JOHOR BAHRU: Authorities seized exotic animal parts worth over RM36.8 million during a raid at a house here on Saturday.

The Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) said the items included 602 objects believed to be python bile, 420 suspected bear bile parts, 135 compressed pieces of alleged primate parts and 191 pieces of purported snake reproductive organs.

Perhilitan Director-General Abdul Kadir Abu Hashim said a Vietnamese national was detained after failing to produce valid permits to prove legal possession of the items.

He said the seized parts were taken to Perhilitan headquarters for further investigation.

Abdul Kadir warned that offenders may face fines of up to RM50,000 or three years’ jail for general wildlife offences, with harsher penalties of up to RM150,000 per part and 15 years’ imprisonment for protected species such as tigers and bears.
