RM7 million upgrade for 38 Tamu Desa

KUALA PENYU: Some 38 Tamu Desa sites in Sabah have been identified for upgrading for the first phase with a fund of RM7 million.

Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said the District Office would be responsible as the implementing agency.

“The District Office will also report the implementation status of this project every month to Kuskop and the Council for the Development of Entrepreneurs, Cooperatives, Hawkers and Small Traders at the District Level (MPUKPPD) which will be chaired by the District Officer,” he said.

According to Ewon, the community guest market or Sunday market is a place where the multi-racial and religious communities in Sabah meet.

“In this connection, the Ministry will start the Tamu Desa Premises Development Programme aimed at upgrading the facilities of commercial spaces and hawker centres in rural areas in Sabah and Sarawak.

“The Federal Government has agreed to approve allocations for the implementation of the Rural Guest Premises Development Programme in Sabah.

“This programme will provide or upgrade business spaces and hawker centres with a more conducive infrastructure to facilitate access to marketing of sales products more effectively at business locations,” he said when speaking at the opening of Tekun Madani Carnival and Showcase Satu Daerah Satu Industri (SDSI) in Datuk Shahbandar Makang Community Hall, recently.

At the event, he also announced the implementation of the Tamu Desa project which will begin in Kuala Penyu with an allocation of RM400,000 to upgrade two sites that have been identified.

“I hope that with the implementation of the Tamu Desa project in Kuala Penyu, we will be able to provide more conducive and comfortable business facilities,” he said.

Also present were the Secretary General of the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Seri Suriani Ahmad, Beaufort MP Datuk Siti Aminah Aching, Kuala Penyu Assemblyman Datuk Limus Jury, Tekun Nasional Chairman Datuk Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid, heads of State and Federal departments and heads of Kuskop agencies.
