Once kept in back gardens, chickens are now a common sight in neighbourhoods like Little Havana and even around the city centre's sleek high-rises and government buildings.

While some locals complain about the dawn chorus, many have embraced the birds as unofficial mascots.

In 2002, Little Havana cemented the rooster’s status with a trail of towering, brightly painted statues along Calle Ocho.

More than two decades later, dozens of the colorfully painted statues, designed by the late artist Pedro Damián, continue to attract tourists seeking fun photo opportunities.
