Ronald Chua named Sandiganbayan justice

CAREER prosecutor and former Commission on Appointments deputy secretary Ronald Chua was appointed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as an associate justice of the Sandiganbayan.

Chua took his oath of office before Chief Justice Alexander Gesmudo on Wednesday.

He was among those shortlisted last May by the Judicial and Bar Council for the post vacated by Associate Justice Ma. Theresa Dolores Gomez-Estoesta, who was appointed Court Administrator in September 2025.

Prior to joining the Sandiganbayan, he served in the Department of Justice’s National Prosecution Service, where he handled criminal cases involving public officials and other major offenses.

Over the course of his prosecutorial career, he rose through the ranks and built a reputation in litigation and trial work.

Chua’s appointment places him in the country’s anti-graft court, which has jurisdiction over criminal and civil cases involving graft and corruption committed by public officials, including violations of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, plunder, and related offenses.
