Rosmah Mansor, wife of former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak, is pursuing RM1 million in damages from a TikTok account holder over allegations that she practised black magic. This claim stems from a video posted in March 2023, which Rosmah says contained defamatory and false statements about her.
In an affidavit filed last year, Rosmah alleged that the video accused her of engaging in sinful acts, rituals involving the devil, and practices associated with shamans and polytheism. She stated that these accusations had severely damaged her reputation, especially as the spouse of a former prime minister and as a patron of various charitable organisations.
Rosmah contends that the defamatory content subjected her to public ridicule and insult, tarnishing her image as a prominent public figure in Malaysia. Seeking general, aggravated, and exemplary damages, her legal team filed the lawsuit on September 19, 2023, against Ku Muhammad Hilmie Ku Din, the TikTok account holder behind the video.
The court proceedings have progressed in Rosmah’s favour. On May 28, 2024, Justice Ahmad Shahrir Salleh granted her a judgment in default after the defendant failed to respond to the lawsuit or appear in court. This judgment allows the court to assess the damages payable to Rosmah without a formal defense from the accused.
During a recent court hearing, Justice Ahmad Shahrir scheduled the matter for May 27, 2025, for an assessment of damages. He also directed Rosmah’s legal team to submit written arguments two weeks before the hearing date.
Rosmah’s lawyer, Baharudeen Ariff, confirmed that the affidavit had been properly served on the defendant, who has yet to respond. This ongoing case highlights the legal repercussions of defamatory content on social media platforms and the potential consequences for individuals who fail to address legal claims against them.
Rosmah’s legal action emphasizes her commitment to restoring her reputation and combating what she describes as baseless and damaging accusations.
