Kota Kinabalu: A primary school teacher who raped the daughter of his woman companion was jailed 12 years and ordered given three strokes of the cane.
Sessions Court Judge Elsie Primus meted out the sentence on the 55-year-old, after ruling that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt against the man on Friday.

He was convicted under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years, and whipping, on conviction.

Read more The court also ordered the man to undergo counselling while serving jail sentence and to be placed under police supervision for three years after completing his sentence.
The court ordered the teacher who was suspended from his job, to serve the jail sentence from the date of his conviction on Friday.

During mitigation, counsel Mohd Ari Nadzrah Abd Rahman who represented the man, asked for leniency saying that the accused is currently suspended and living with his parents who are suffering from dementia.

In reply, Deputy Public Prosecutor Tham Pou Jin urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence due to the seriousness of the case and the trauma suffered by the victim.
During the hearing, the prosecution had called four witnesses while the defence produced two witnesses.
