Royal Marsden trial identifies prostate cancer treatment with fewer side effects

  • Long-term findings from the PACE-A trial show that targeted stereotactic body radiotherapy is as effective as surgery for low-to-intermediate-risk prostate cancer.
  • After eight years, 91.2 per cent of men who received radiotherapy remained free from cancer recurrence, compared with 83.7 per cent of those who underwent surgery.
  • The trial, led by The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and The Institute of Cancer Research, London, tracked 123 patients over an average of eight years.
  • Radiotherapy patients experienced significantly fewer side effects, with 8.3 per cent requiring daily urinary pads after five years compared to 48 per cent of surgery patients.
  • Chief investigator Professor Nicholas van As said the results provide crucial evidence to help patients make informed choices while preserving their quality of life.
