Jalandhar-based RTI activist Simranjeet Singh was gunned down by two bike-borne youths outside the law gate of Lovely Professional University at Chaheru village of Phagwara on Saturday afternoon.
The victim had faced an attack from armed assailants outside a gym in Model Town a year ago but had managed to escape.
Jalandhar City police had provided him two gunmen, but he was reportedly moving without security when he was fired upon from close range. He died on the spot.
For over a decade, Simranjeet Singh had been filing petitions and complaints against several individuals in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Punjab Police, and the Enforcement Directorate.
He is learnt to have also provided the ED with certain documents against Punjab minister Sanjeev Arora, who is currently lodged in jail.
A resident of Adarsh Nagar, Simranjeet had divorced his first wife and had recently remarried.
Jalandhar Range DIG Naveen Singla said that after receiving information, a team from Satnampura Police Station in Phagwara reached the spot. He said a .32 bore pistol from the crime scene and a .12 bore rifle were recovered from a Fortuner parked near the site.
He added that multiple teams, including Counter Intelligence units, have been deployed to nab the accused.
