Russia has launched a major three-day military exercise, involving tens of thousands of troops and drills by its nuclear forces, coinciding with Vladimir Putin’s visit to Beijing.

The Ministry of Defence in Moscow announced on Tuesday that 64,000 troops and 7,800 pieces of military equipment would be deployed, including more than 200 missile launchers.

The exercise also involves 140 aircraft, 73 naval vessels and 13 submarines. Eight of these submarines are nuclear-armed, the Russian state news agency TASS reported.

From the naval forces, the Northern Fleet in the European north of Russia and the Pacific Fleet in the Far East are taking part.

The aim is to test the operational readiness of command structures and troops in deterring a potential adversary, the military said. Tests involving ballistic missiles and cruise missiles would be conducted at target ranges in Russia.

On Monday it was announced that deploying nuclear weapons stationed in Belarus would be practised.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry stated that Moscow was making Minsk an accomplice to its nuclear threats.

Putin is expected in Beijing on Tuesday for a two-day visit, following US President Donald Trump's visit last week.
