A Russian drone struck a high-rise building in the Romanian city of Galați, near the border with Ukraine, authorities said on Friday.
The impact triggered a fire on the 10th floor of the residential block, and two people sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene, Romania's Interior Ministry said in a post on Facebook. Romania is a member of both the European Union and NATO.
The Defence Ministry in Bucharest said Russia had again attacked civilian targets and infrastructure in Ukraine near the Romanian border overnight. One of the drones entered Romanian airspace and crashed into the high-rise in Galați, the ministry said.
The ministry added that two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled from the Fetesti military base at 1:19 am (2219 GMT Thursday), supported by a Romanian Air Force helicopter.
The Interior Ministry said that no other drones had initially been sighted. An investigative team specializing in explosions headed to the scene.
Galați is located on the Danube River and sits near Romania's borders with Moldova and Ukraine.
Russia has repeatedly attacked neighbouring Ukraine with large numbers of drones and there have been isolated cases in which drones have entered the airspace of NATO countries. Ukrainian drones or missiles have also occasionally violated neighbouring countries' airspace.
Russian forces have repeatedly attacked the Ukrainian Danube port of Reni directly across the border from Galați. Drones and drone fragments have repeatedly landed on Romanian territory.
In April, a Russian drone crashed over Galați, striking an annexe of an apartment block and causing minor damage, according to authorities. No one was injured.
The United Kingdom has deployed Typhoon fighter jets to help Romania defend its airspace as part of NATO support linked to Russia's war against Ukraine.
Ukraine has been defending itself against Russia's full-scale invasion for more than four years. Moscow attacks its neighbour almost daily with drones and missiles.
