Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah contingent secured five gold, five silver and three bronze medals at the 22nd Sukma Games in Selangor on Sunday.
As of press time, the Sabah contingent’s medal tally stood at 30 golds, 27 silvers and 36 bronzes.
Two of Sunday’s golds were secured in wushu with Fyyenly Himon winning the men’s 52kg sanda and Amirah Sofea Azlan taking the women’s 48kg sanda.
The victory also saw both athletes successfully defend their title won in Sarawak two years ago.
L/R: Fyyenly, Amirah, Marvell and Jamie.The remaining gold medals were delivered by the women’s kumite team (Allyssa Audrey Anthony, Adeola Fay Robert and Ameera Jnita Liew) after a 2-0 final win against Johor, the women’s sepak takraw regu team following a 15-10, 15-13 triumph over Perak and gymnast Marvell Vincent Voo in the parallel bars.
The silver medals came from the sepak takraw men’s regu team, boxers Muhd Rayyan Haykal Muhd Alli Shaharuddin (men’s middleweight) and Clif Mijol (men’s lightweight), muaythai exponent Ed Ryan Jefferson (men’s 51-54kg) and the karate men’s kumite team, while the bronze medal winners were the women rugby’s sevens team along with boxers Johanitasyah (women’s feather weight) and Hallary Boy (men’s light middle weight).
Meanwhile, Sabah Golf Association (SGA) took immense pride in the achievement of Jamie Tan Huan Ying, who clinched the silver medal in golf for the Sabah contingent at the 2026 Sukma Games.
Jamie put on a stellar performance, sharing the lead through the first two rounds before a challenging final round placed her in a hard-fought second.
SGA president Nash Hon, who was present at the event to congratulate Jamie, announced that the committee will provide incentives in recognition of her achievement.
He stated that the State body is proud to support her inspiring journey, where her dedication, perseverance and hard work have elevated her game to the national stage.
He further noted that winning the silver medal against the nation’s top young talent represents a major milestone for the growth of golf in Sabah.
While reaffirming SGA’s commitment to golf development, he admitted that securing sponsorships and funding has been a major hurdle.
He expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported the Sabah team. In particular, he thanked the Ministry of Youth Development, Sports Advancement and Creative Economy, alongside the Sabah Sports Council, for their instrumental role in golf development.
He also acknowledged the financial assistance provided by the Finance Ministry and SMJ Energy.
Additionally, he urged the private sector to step forward with further support, noting that corporate sponsorships are tax-deductible.
He also thanked team coach Albright Chong, appointed by SGA after the last Sukma to utilise his extensive experience to identify and develop the current Sukma players.
Meanwhile, SGA secretary and Sukma team manager Ian Yong, alongside team chaperone Julia Hwong expressed their appreciation to all players and their parents for their support.
