The Sabah State Government has recently decided to pass a bill increasing the salaries of members of the state Cabinet and assemblymen amid concerns of rising living costs and a downturn in economic opportunities.

Defending the decision, the state’s Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Jeffrey Kitingan says that the raise to RM11,000 for every state assemblyman was still lower compared to other states.

“We are left behind, becoming amongst those to receive the lowest salary compared to other states.”

“We should pity our assemblymen who only receive RM7,000 a month.”

“In Sarawak, their assemblymen are paid RM15,000 a month, so we only raise our salary to RM11,000. It will only cost the state RM5.6 million in expenditure.”

What did netizens think of the move? A majority who commented on the news item were unimpressed.
