Sabah approves RM1.4 billion in development plans

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's property sector continues to record healthy growth, with more than 30 development plans worth a combined gross development value (GDV) of RM1.4 billion approved by the State Planning Council in June.

Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif said the steady increase in development applications reflected positive economic growth and sustained investor confidence, with approvals covering mainly residential, industrial and tourism projects.

He said the State Planning Council, which meets monthly, assesses and grants interim approval for development proposals subject to developers fulfilling requirements set by relevant ministries and agencies, including environmental, infrastructure and technical compliance.

Arifin said the council received about 70 development plan applications in May, with an estimated combined GDV of RM4 billion, adding that the streamlined approval process was aimed at accelerating development while ensuring regulatory compliance.

He also said the State Government, together with the Sabah Housing and Real Estate Developers Association (Shareda) and the Sabah Housing and Town Development Board (LPPB), would continue expanding affordable housing priced between RM60,000 and RM100,000 for first-time buyers and lower-income groups.
