Sabah authorities detain 19 undocumented migrants in Lahad Datu

KOTA KINABALU – Some 19 undocumented migrants were detained in a six-day joint operation organised by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESScom) in the east coast district of Lahad Datu.

In addition, more than 40 fines were issued for various offences committed in the same period.

ESScom commander Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the operation held from December 1 to 6 saw a total of 1,331 physical checks on individuals, 205 vehicles and 486 homes and premises were inspected.

He added that the operation, which involved various enforcement agencies, was aimed at curbing cross-border criminal elements who pose a threat to national security and public peace in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone.

“The 19 detainees will be repatriated to their home country.

“Meanwhile, 26 traffic summonses were issued, while five fines were issued by the Road Transport Department for various offences under the Road Transport Act 1987.

“Smuggled cigarettes from various brands worth RM2,002 were also seized in the operation, while 14 compounds were issued by the district council involving offences such as trading without permits, food mishandling and illegal electricity connections, specifically in Kg Panji in Lahad Datu,” he said in a statement today.

The operation involved 80 officers from police, army, district office, immigration, the National Registration Department, Road Transport Department, Customs Department, Health Office, Welfare Department, Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd and others. – The Vibes, December 7, 2022
