Kota Kinabalu: A coalition of associations has urged the Sabah Government to take a more active role in shaping labour laws according to the State's economic needs rather than passively adopting Federal directives that may be unsuitable for Sabah's circumstances.

The concern was voiced during a joint press conference by the Sabah Employers Association, Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (Sabah Branch), Sabah Entrepreneurs Transformation, Kota Kinabalu Hardware, Machinery and Building Materials Traders Association, Sabah Timber Industry Association, Timber Association Sabah and Federation of Sabah Industries, here, Wednesday.

They said the upcoming labour law changes like the Occupational Health and Safety Act, amendments to the Sabah Labour Ordinance, Housing Act 446 and wage models will further increase business costs.

"We are disturbed that the Sabah Government is taking a passive role, allowing the Federal Government to dictate the direction of these amendments without asserting Sabah's prerogative and considering its context," they said.
