Sabah Electricity, PDRM strengthen safety cooperation

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (Sabah Electricity) and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Sabah Contingent are strengthening cooperation to enhance electrical safety awareness and knowledge among police personnel carrying out duties in the field.

According to a statement Wednesday, the initiative was formalised through an Electrical Safety Awareness Briefing for PDRM Sabah Contingent personnel held at the Sabah Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK) in Kepayan here.

The cooperation also took into account the recent accident involving three PDRM personnel in Weston, Beaufort, which resulted in a loss of life due to electric shock.

The incident highlighted the importance of electrical safety knowledge and awareness, particularly among personnel who carry out duties under various conditions in the field.

Sabah Electricity said electrical safety required a high level of awareness, especially among personnel who might encounter electrical installations while performing their duties.

Earlier, a Sabah Electricity delegation led by Chief Executive Officer Datuk Ir Ts Mohd Yaakob Jaafar paid a courtesy visit to Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun before the briefing.

The visit aimed to strengthen strategic cooperation between PDRM and Sabah Electricity, particularly in electrical safety, public order and the wellbeing of the people in Sabah.

As the utility company responsible for the electricity supply system, Sabah Electricity views safety as a shared responsibility, with basic knowledge of electrical hazards helping personnel identify risks and take appropriate precautionary measures.

Mohd Yaakob said the cooperation with PDRM was part of Sabah Electricity’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the culture of electrical safety.

Sabah Electricity also said integrated efforts with PDRM and other government agencies could help raise awareness and promote a culture of preventing electrical accidents among the people of Sabah.

A total of 300 police personnel took part in the briefing physically and online via Zoom, allowing electrical safety information to be disseminated more widely to PDRM personnel throughout Sabah.

The programme will be implemented in stages throughout Sabah, focusing on identifying electrical hazards, the risk of electric shock, safety measures when near electrical installations and appropriate action when faced with situations involving electrical risks.
