SANDAKAN: Old electric cables in the Jalan Cecily area are being replaced in stages to ensure a more stable supply especially during peak hours between 7pm and 10pm.
The measure was taken following complaints from residents about unstable voltage problems, believed to be due to increased electricity consumption.
AdvertisementAccording to Karamunting Assemblyman Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin, who is also Karamunting Division Chief of the Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, Sabah Electricity (SE) is currently in the process of replacing the old cables and dividing the electricity supply in the area into three zones to reduce the system load.
“Residents of Jalan Cecily have long faced the problem of unstable electricity supply. Some houses only receive a supply of around 13 to 15 kilowatt-hours (kWh), far lower than daily needs.

The meeting was also attended by the SE Sandakan (East) Manager, Ir Siti Jamilah Alias, as well as department heads and contractors.

However, George said currently, the problem of power supply disruptions in Jalan Cecily had still not been fully resolved because the work to upgrade the electrical cables is still not completed.

Apart from that, SE will also study in more depth the need to replace and upgrade other cables that are worn out, to ensure that residents in the Jalan Cecily area can get a more stable and sufficient electricity supply.
George called on SE to accelerate the work to upgrade old electrical cables and infrastructure to ensure that residents get a stable and sufficient electricity supply.
Meanwhile, George also urged SE to install and maintain streetlights in the still dark areas of Jalan Cecily, including those covered by large trees.
He said that despite installing 200 solar lights along the road as assemblyman, no one could fully rely on solar lights because they will dim during heavy rain.
“This matter is very important because it involves the safety of road users, especially now during the rainy season,” he said.
For this, George was informed during the meeting that SE contractors would resolve the problem, while cooperation with the Sandakan Municipal Council would continue for the maintenance of street lights under their supervision.
“These efforts (to increase electricity supply and improve street lights) are important to ensure the stability of the electricity supply and reduce disruption to the daily lives of residents.
“Cooperation between SE, elected representatives, and other government agencies is very much needed to address infrastructure problems like this,” he said.
