KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Government has formally issued an official circular recognising the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) for independent Chinese secondary schools in the State.
Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe, who is also Luyang assemblyman, said in a Facebook post on Saturday, the Cabinet endorsed the recognition on Oct 1 following his proposal to ensure equal treatment for UEC holders under the State scholarship scheme.
Phoong said the move was given effect through an official government circular dated Oct 3, marking the first time Sabah had formally acknowledged the UEC in writing.
He said coordination between his Ministry, the Sabah United Chinese School Committees Association (Dong Zong Sabah), and independent school principals had ensured that UEC candidates’ details were submitted to the scholarship secretariat for processing.
He added that UEC students have since begun receiving offer letters for State scholarships, describing it as a meaningful milestone for education development and inclusivity in Sabah.
