KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Government is not considering a rent-to-own scheme for People’s Housing Project (PPR) units due to overwhelming demand for rentals, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam.

He explained that converting PPR units to ownership could reduce availability for others still waiting.

“This is a temporary measure. Rent-to-own may worsen the situation,” he told the State Assembly.

He also updated that 237 out of 315 tenants from unsafe Tanjung Aru Flats were offered new homes, with 113 accepting and relocating. However, 124 declined due to distance from essential services.
