PENAMPANG: Sabah is uniquely positioned to become one of Asean’s important digital and blue economy gateways, said Malaysia Digital Chamber of Commerce (MDCC) President Eldrick Koh.
He said Sabah’s rich marine resources, strategic location, growing tourism industry, renewable energy potential and vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem provided it with every opportunity to become a regional leader in sustainable economic development.
Speaking at the 10th Malaysian Digital Economy Forum (MDEF) 2026 at ITCC Penampang on Tuesday, Eldrick said this year’s MDEF theme, “Blue Economy and Emerging Technologies: Empowering a Resilient Digital and Sustainable Future for Malaysia and Asean”, was particularly timely.
“This year is particularly special as we celebrate the 10th edition of MDEF, a decade of bringing together Government, industry, innovators, entrepreneurs and thought leaders to shape Malaysia’s digital future,” he said.
Eldrick’s speech was read by MDCC Vice President John Lim Eldrick said when MDCC was established, its vision was to bridge the Government, industry, technology providers and entrepreneurs, adding that the vision had become even more relevant today.
“Digital transformation is no longer just about adopting technology. It is about creating better businesses, better jobs, better communities and ultimately a better future for Malaysia,” he said.
Eldrick said the forum was important as it brought together distinguished experts to discuss the blue economy, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, smart tourism and the new digital visitor economy, which he said was shaping the future of Malaysia and Asean.
He encouraged delegates to use the forum not only to learn, but also to connect, collaborate and create new partnerships.
“Many successful businesses begin with a simple conversation. Perhaps today, that conversation will happen right here in this room,” he said.
Eldrick also expressed his appreciation to Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun for attending the forum, saying his presence demonstrated Sabah’s strong commitment to digital transformation and sustainable economic growth.
He also thanked the organising chairman Alvis Loo, the Sabah MDCC Committee, partners, sponsors, moderators, panellists, volunteers and everyone who worked to make the forum possible.
The forum also witnessed the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), the welcoming of new MDCC members and the recognition of outstanding contributors during the awards presentation.
The initiatives reflected the strength of the economic system and the shared commitment towards advancing Malaysia’s digital economy, said Eldrick.
