Sabah held to 1-1 draw

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah FC were held to a 1-1 draw by Negeri Sembilan FC in their Super League encounter at Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi on Saturday.

Heavy rain left the pitch waterlogged, making conditions difficult for both teams in the men’s match.

This allowed Sabah FC to capitalise on the missed chances, taking the lead in first-half injury time when Gonzalo Di Renzo fired a precise shot into the bottom-left corner.

Negeri Sembilan responded strongly after the interval, putting the visitors under sustained pressure.

Their efforts paid off in the 68th minute when Sabah’s Fazrul Danel was penalised for handball, allowing Jovan Motika to convert the resulting penalty and restore parity.

Neither side managed to find a winner, leaving Sabah FC fourth in the league standings with seven points, while Negeri Sembilan remained eighth with five points.

Meanwhile, Sabah FA’s women’s team ended their National Women’s League group-stage campaign on a high with a comfortable 3-0 win over Red Eagles SC at Likas Stadium.

The victory extended Sabah’s unbeaten run, with the team finishing the group stage on 26 points from eight wins and two draws.

Despite resting several regular starters, including captain Steffi Kaur, Sabah dominated proceedings from the outset as Red Eagles struggled to contain the hosts.

Sabah took the lead in the 12th minute when Ainie Tulis caught the goalkeeper off guard with a looping effort.

After missing several opportunities to extend their advantage, Sabah doubled their lead in the 71st minute through Rocillyeka Lole.

Prolific forward Enzi Broussard then sealed the victory with a third goal in the first minute of stoppage time.

The result sets up another meeting between the two sides in the semi-finals on October 25, with Sabah carrying strong momentum into the knockout stage.
