Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Karate Association (SKA) emerged the overall champions of the 21st Milo Open Karate Championship that was held over the weekends at Titiwangsa Indoor Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.
The team represented by 73 athletes won 18 gold, 17 silver and 28 bronze medals to top the medal tally.
The gold medalists were Rajis Danish Rayyan (10-11 individual kata, kumite -40kg), Boys team B kumite (10-13), Zurizal Mickail Zaquan (cadet ind.kumite +70kg), Zurizal Alvince (cadet ind.kumite -63kg), Hasland Hezrond Ankes (cadet ind.kumite -70kg), Jane Cassandr (girls cadet ind.kata),Philip Priscilla Elysa (female cadet ind.kumite +54kg)Razmi Nur Radhiah Fathiah (female cadet ind.kumite -47kg), Baking Audrey Adreana (female cadet ind.kumite -54kg), Female team kata (14-17),Zurizal Ivy Catrinaz (girls ind.kata 10-11), Nur Farhadylia Ershan Jr (girls ind.kata 12-13, ind.kumite 12-13), Girls team kata (13 below), girls team kumite (10-13), Robert Adeola Fay (junior ind.kumite female -53kg), Male team kata (14-17).
SKA secretary general Julian Chin, who did not set any target for the athletes, was impressed with their achievement .
“The result was beyond our expectation because we have not been able to take part in competitions for the past two years. This showed that we are on the right track in our development programme despite the pandemic as ninety percent of the athletes are below 15-year-old,” he said on Tuesday.
He thanked the parents and coaches for their role in grooming the athletes.
