Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah State Leadership Council (MPN) of Keadilan welcomed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s willingness to increase the number of parliamentary seats for Sabah and Sarawak, in line with the Malaysia Agreement 1963 principle of equal partners.

MPN Chairman Datuk Mustapha Sakmud described the move as historic and timely, coinciding with Malaysia’s 62nd Malaysia Day celebration, while strengthening the spirit underpinning the formation of the Federation of Malaysia.

He said the decision followed recent discussions at the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) Implementation Action Council meeting in Sarawak, where various issues related to the rights and position of Sabah and Sarawak were constructively deliberated.

“The move not only corrects the imbalance of representation in the Dewan Rakyat but also serves as a catalyst to accelerate development in Sabah and Sarawak through more focused and effective policies.

“With stronger voices in Parliament, the people of both states can be assured that their rights are respected and defended,” he said in a statement, Sunday.

He added that Keadilan Sabah is confident the step would further strengthen Federal ties with Sabah and Sarawak, recognising both regions as equal partners in building a more inclusive and prosperous Malaysia.

“On behalf of Keadilan Sabah, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting the reform agenda of the Unity Government to ensure Sabah and Sarawak fully benefit from the implementation of MA63 and the additional parliamentary seats to be realised,” Mustapha said.

He stressed that the decision sends a clear message — that Sabah and Sarawak are strategic partners in shaping the nation’s future, in line with the spirit of MA63 and the Shared Prosperity Vision for all Malaysians.
